Growing from seed

Have some new cactus starting up: devil's tongue, fire barrel and chiotilla cactus.
They have such a unique look when they first sprout up.
Has anyone else grown cactus from seed?

Wow, how long did they take from seed to get to where they are? I don't know that I've ever seen cacti so small!

I saved some seed from the barrel cactus fruit I've been eating, but haven't tried germinating them yet. I assumed they might take forever to grow from seed, but I've never tried it. Maybe I will ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

My current cactus excitement is on the new pups that our Peruvian Apple cactus just put out! we planted it in autumn from transplant and this is the first activity we've seen since then ๐Ÿ˜

I got a chance to try one of the fruits last year and thought it was so tasty that we planted this one ๐Ÿ˜‹ ever try them?

Nice! Yes I have tried them, they're great, but I haven't found a cutting or plant to grow here as of yet.

The cactus has sprouted up in about a week. It's not the sprouting that takes a long time, it's the full development. I have golden barrel cactus that I have sprouted from seed as well, they are about 1.5 years old. They are putting on decent size for such a plant that obviously doesn't grow quickly.

For some reason I expected the germination to take forever too, but I guess that doesn't make sense in a place where rain is so infrequent.

I've never grown any cacti from seed, but you know it sounds really fun so I'll try it

It's hilarious how long the spines are compared to the size of the barrels ๐Ÿ˜† they look great!

Well, some varieties can take a bit longer, but generally yes they are all about taking advantage of the rain when it comes.
I do think it's a great way to learn more about cacti and you might find some varieties that are hard to acquire otherwise.
I guess when they are this small they need all the help they can get to prevent being eaten ๐Ÿคฃ
