Growing and Harvesting

Curious if anyone is harvesting anything at this point? I know that some of you are just starting to plant, but I know a few are in similar conditions as mine (zone 9/10).
Right at the moment it is mulberry season here in my space (plus some tomatoes and peppers, eggplants are shaping up).

Wow, I can't believe you have tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants already, that's wild! 🀯 did they just go right through winter with no frost?

I was just eating the last of the snap peas πŸ«› and still have a bit of kale, chard, and broccoli. Most of the brassicas have gone to flower, though, so most of the food out there is for the pollinators at the moment. They seem to be enjoying themselves 🐝πŸͺ²πŸ¦‹πŸœπŸ˜

I'm out frantically trying to plant every warm season crop at once, now that we seem safe from threat of frost πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎπŸ€ͺ


Nice you were able to get some brassicas going, because of health and the warmer winter, I didn't manage to get anything of the "colder items" growing. Good to be feeding the pollinators though - most have been enjoying the globemallow, chuparosa and milkweed (plus citrus and moringa) in my space 😁

Everything overwintered, had no frost here and it never got below 30ΒΊ so yes the plants have a head start. I'm still planting others though and asparagus is also coming in which is great.


They've been loving the globemallow here too, I really like the peachy-colored ones 🀩

Hey so I saw asparagus growing in a demonstration garden here last year and didn't realize before that it would grow in this climate and make it through the summers. That got me excited to try it!

Did you start it from seed? And does it die back to the soil level in winter? I've never grown it anywhere before but I'm so curious about how it does for you here, and how long it took


Yes I like the peach colored ones as well, though mine is more of the orange variety (it volunteered).

Asparagus does just fine around here, just as they did where my parents lived in California (which can have extremely hot dry summers). I have one bunch that started from root stock and I have some that I've also grown from seed, so I have several batches at different stages.

If growing from seed it will take about three years before you can start harvesting, maybe even four - simply because you are needing the plant to mature more before being able to take any of the spears (might harvest one, but several years before meaningful harvest). Even if you buy root stock, you need to wait at least a year before harvesting, and make a point of not taking too many the first time or two to allow the plant to mature. But asparagus is a perennial, so even though it's taking a few years to mature, you'll have it for 15 years or so for production.

They do die back to the ground, so it's important to remember where you planted them 🀣 If you choose the right variety you can end up having flowers and seeds from them, which is what I'm saving to starting new ones from. This doesn't always happen though.


Ok that's super helpful, I didn't realize how much quicker it would be from root stock. I knew it's a waiting game for a while, but patience is my middle name! 😌
